Save-the-Date Magnets vs. Wedding Favor Magnets: Which Do You Need?
Quick answer: One announces your date; the other thanks your guests. Compare wording, quantities and card designs to choose the right wedding magnet for your celebration.
Last updated September 23, 2026.
Save-the-date magnets and wedding favor magnets can feature the same venue illustration, names and date, but they serve different moments. A save-the-date magnet asks guests to reserve your wedding date before the celebration. A wedding favor magnet thanks them for being part of it and gives them a keepsake to take home.
If you are choosing between the two, start with when guests will receive the magnet. That decision helps you choose the wording, count your order and plan the card around it.
Save-the-date magnets vs. wedding favor magnets at a glance
| Detail | Save-the-date magnet | Wedding favor magnet |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Announce your date and help guests plan. | Thank guests and mark the celebration. |
| When guests receive it | Before the formal invitation. | At the wedding or in a welcome bag. |
| Useful wording | Names, full date, city and “Formal invitation to follow.” | Names, wedding date and a short thank-you. |
| How to count | Usually by the households receiving an announcement. | By guests, couples or households, depending on your gifting plan. |
| Extra planning | Mailing materials, addresses and postage. | Table placement, welcome bags or a favor display. |
When a save-the-date magnet makes sense
Choose a save-the-date magnet when your date and location are confirmed and you want guests to keep them visible. It can be particularly useful when people need to arrange travel or time off. Only send announcements to people you intend to invite.
Keep the message focused. Your names, the full wedding date and the city are usually enough for the magnet or card. Add a wedding website if it is ready to share. Detailed schedules, meal choices and RSVP instructions can wait for the invitation or website.
For example, the card could read: “Save the Date / Emma & Alex / June 12, 2027 / Charleston, South Carolina / Formal invitation to follow.” Writing out the month avoids confusion between date formats. See our save-the-date magnet wording examples for more layouts.
A save-the-date is not automatically a complete wedding invitation. If you want to use a magnet and card as the invitation itself, plan space for the ceremony details and a clear way to RSVP, and confirm the layout before ordering.
When a wedding favor magnet is the better fit
Choose a wedding favor magnet if your announcements are already sent or your priority is a gift guests can bring home. A venue illustration connects the keepsake to the place you celebrated; a couple illustration makes the design more personal to the two of you.
The backing card can carry a short message such as “Thank you for celebrating with us.” Keep the magnet itself simple enough to enjoy after the wedding: artwork, names and the date often work well together. Longer sentiments can go on the card.
Think about how guests will collect their gifts. One at each place setting suggests a gift per person. A shared display needs a small sign explaining whether each guest or each couple should take one. Our wedding magnet display guide covers practical setup ideas.
Count households and guests separately
Your save-the-date quantity may be smaller than your favor quantity. For example, a wedding with 50 guests might have 28 households on the mailing list. That would mean 28 announcements, while a favor at every place setting would require 50 gifts, before adding any extras you choose to keep.
This is an example, not a fixed ratio. Count your actual mailing addresses, decide whether favors are per person or per household, and allow for your own keepsakes or any additional recipients. Check the available package quantities against each list before buying. For more help, use our wedding favor quantity guide.
Can you use both without repeating the same gift?
Yes, but give each version a reason to exist. You could announce the date with a venue illustration, then choose a couple portrait for the wedding-day gift. Another approach is to coordinate the colors while changing the card from an announcement to a thank-you.
If you want a smaller stationery budget, choose one magnet moment. Send a paper or digital save-the-date and give magnets at the reception, or send magnet announcements and choose a different wedding favor. You do not need two sets simply because both options are available.
For the linked Moment Keeps Gifts packages, one custom artwork is included per package. A second artwork or a separate card version needs confirmation; do not assume two different sets are included in one package.
From reference photo to finished design
- Choose the purpose. Tell us whether you are creating a save-the-date announcement or a wedding favor, plus the date you need the order in hand.
- Send your reference and wording. Use a clear venue or couple photo. Provide names, the date, preferred colors and the exact card text.
- Review the digital proof. Check spelling, the date, location, artwork and text placement. Look at whether the wording remains readable at the proposed finished size.
- Approve before production. The design is produced after your approval. Allow time for any revisions, production, delivery and your own mailing or event setup.
Our custom save-the-date magnets with cards offer 3mm and 5mm acrylic options, a coordinated backing card per piece and a digital proof. For a reception gift, explore our personalized wedding venue magnets. Check the selected listing for its dimensions and package options.

Mailing and timing questions
Can I mail an acrylic magnet in a regular envelope?
Do not assume a paper envelope and ordinary letter postage will suit it. Ask your carrier about the complete packed item's thickness, weight and protection needs. Envelopes and postage are not included with our save-the-date magnet packages.
Which deadline should I give when ordering?
For save-the-dates, give the date you need the finished order before mailing it to guests. For favors, give your packing or venue-setup deadline. Both may be earlier than the wedding itself. Check current estimates and destination details in our shipping information.
Can I keep the same artwork and change the words?
You can ask for coordinated versions, but confirm the wording, quantities and any additional cost before ordering. A save-the-date announcement and a thank-you favor should each have their own clearly approved layout.
